The ASFA Math-Science 9th and 10th grade research class recently completed independent science and engineering research projects and presented them at the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (CARSEF) with great success! 🔬✨

Now, these students are shifting their focus—from communicating research to scientists using academic language and norms, to sharing their ideas with a broader public audience. Their next step: storytelling through film. 🎬

To kick things off, filmmaker Nico Hess visited to guide students in shaping compelling narratives. Hess, director of the conservation film Salabama (featured at the Southern Exposure Film Festival), shared how to build story arcs, develop characters, and create tension through challenges—helping students transform their scientific research into engaging stories for everyday audiences.
