Alabama School of Fine Arts Performance Season

See the students of Alabama School of Fine Arts in action! Performance, exhibits, and symposiums are part of the ASFA curriculum and are a way for students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities. They also provide accessible arts and sciences experiences for the public. The performance season showcases main stage dance, music, and theatre productions, readings, art exhibit openings, and research symposiums.

ASFA Music Presents: Jazz at the Carver

Friday, April 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM 

Join the award-winning ASFA Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Robert Janssen and their special guest, Mingusphere, for an unforgettable evening of jazz music at the historic Carver Theater in downtown Birmingham. Mingusphere is Rob Alley, trumpet; Gary Wheat, saxophone; Chris Kozak, bass; and Michael Glaser, drums. Hear ASFA’s budding jazz stars along with seasoned professionals playing the music of Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Henry Mancini, Miles Davis, and more!

ASFA Math Science Presents: Senior Research Symposium

This event showcases the research our bright and talented math-science seniors have worked on throughout their time at Alabama School of Fine Arts.

Each senior will present their work according to the following schedule. We hope you can join us for this inspiring FREE event!

SCHEDULE:

8:30-10:30 am: Poster Session (open to the public)

12:00-3:50 pm: Research Project Judging (private)

5:00-7:00 pm: Senior Research Project Presentations (open to the public)

7:00-7:45 pm: Reception (private)

ASFA Music Presents: Vocal Ensembles

Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 7:00 PM

The ASFA Vocal Department will present an All-Vocal evening.

The first half will feature the voices of the ASFA Vocal ensemble led by Ms. Cathy Spence.

The second half will be a performance of the Faure “Requiem,” conducted by Alexander Fokkens and featuring the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra. Soloist to be announced at a later date.

Senior Choreography 2025

The rite of passage for all ASFA Dance Seniors, students create new works for their peers in the safe ASFA environment to experiment with new choreography, collaborate with other ASFA Departments. They are guided by master collaborator, Margi Cole. The finale to the program will feature ASFA Dance Seniors in a farewell performance with a new work from ASFA alum, Juilliard grad and Broadway star Rachel Lockhart.

ASFA Music Presents: Concerto Festival​

Friday, May 9, 2025 at 7:00 PM​

Please make plans to enjoy the Bi-annual ASFA Concerto Festival. The best soloists chosen to audition from ASFA Music will perform with the ASFA Orchestra. The performance will also include the first movement of Symphony 1 in E Minor by American Composer Florence Price and the Suite from Alien.
