We understand that some children have special dietary needs and we will do our best to accommodate those needs. For a student with a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, or a non-life-threatening food allergy, a diet prescription signed by a licensed physician, nurse, registered dietitian, or physician assistant is strongly suggested. A student with a disability or life-threatening food allergy must have a diet prescription signed by a licensed physician.

Physician’s Statement for Children with Disabilities USDA regulations 7 CFR Part 15b require substitutions or modifications in school meals for children whose disabilities restrict their diets. A child with a disability must be provided substitutions in foods when that need is supported by a statement signed by a licensed physician. The physician’s statement must identify:

• the child’s disability
• an explanation of why the disability restricts the child’s diet
• the major life activity affected by the disability
• the food or foods to be omitted from the child’s diet, and the food or choice of foods that must be substituted

Medical Statement for Children with Special Dietary Needs: each special dietary request must be supported by a statement that explains the food substitution that is requested. It must be signed by a recognized medical authority. The medical statement must include:

• an identification of the medical or other special dietary condition which restricts the child’s diet
• the food or foods to be omitted from the child’s diet
• the food or choice of foods to be substituted

The Free & Reduced Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low‐cost or free lunches to families that meet the income eligibility guidelines. Below you'll find program information and the free and reduced application. The resulting status may affect other benefits your student may be entitled to receive. Each family attending ASFA needs to submit a form directly to ASFA regardless of what other school districts siblings may be attending.

*Dinner, snacks, and additional servings of food are not included in this program.

Available Open Meals Program

Alabama School of Fine Arts would like to share information concerning current Open/Summer Feeding Programs.

Local schools will be offering free breakfast and lunches to area children through the USDA Summer Feeding Program while schools are closed. This will ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Through this program, free, nutritious meals are provided to all children during the time school is closed.

Although ASFA does not host an Open/Summer Feeding site, your child may attend a Summer Feeding Program outside of our school.

The ASFA Child Nutrition Program (CNP) strives to provide a healthy eating environment and offers healthy choices to our students and staff every day.

School meal requirements

ASFA CNP continues to meet the USDA Healthy Meal requirements by providing a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthier entrees in our school cafeterias.

Some of the 2010 Requirements Include

• Increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables
• Reducing the sodium in meals over the next 10 years
• Setting calorie limits
• Increasing whole grains
• Limiting the amount of meat/meat alternatives and grains

Students are required to have ½ cup of fruit or vegetable on their tray for it to count as a full meal. Anything less than a full meal will be charged as individual items.

What ASFA is Doing

• Fresh fruit and vegetables are served every day
• Over 50% of all grains are whole wheat
• Milk is only low-fat or fat-free
• Dark green and orange vegetables are served on a weekly basis
• Dried beans & Legumes are served weekly
• Vegetarian options are offered daily
• Premade Grab ‘n Go salads and meals are available daily

CNP offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily to give students more options so choosing fruits and vegetables will be easy. Schools are limited to how much meat/meat alternate and grains that can be offered. This means that some of the main entrée may not be as large as the students would like. Remember, though, that there will be plenty of fruits and vegetables available to fill out the meal and ensure students have a full, filling plate of food to eat. We face some challenges to meet the meal requirements in the current year with the current supply chain issues and economic conditions, but our school nutrition program is working hard to make healthy meals for our students and make each meal something our students will enjoy. 

How Can You Help?

The school nutrition program needs the support of parents to succeed. Parents can support this effort by encouraging children to give healthier meals a try and talking about healthy options or simply introducing your child to these healthy changes at home. You are your child’s primary role model. When they see you choose healthy foods, they are more likely to choose them as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Meal Requirements Overview

Breakfast:  Students may choose 3 or 4 out of 4 meal components:  Meat or Substitute, Grains, Fruit, Vegetable, Low-fat or Fat-free Milk. 

Lunch:  Students may choose 3, 4 or 5 out of 5 meal components:  Meat or Substitute, Grains, Fruit, Vegetable, Low-fat or Fat-free Milk. 

Students must choose at least one full (1/2 cup) serving of fruit or vegetable to complete a reimbursable meal. Portion sizes for some food items may vary by grade group (middle school vs. high school) to meet the guidelines

Titan School Solutions:  We encourage all students to have a Titan account.  Please prepay into your child’s account.  Students with a negative balance will not be allowed to purchase snacks, beverages, or ala carte items.

Environmentalism Efforts

In an effort to reduce plastic waste, we now offer free water bottle and cup refills on the ASFA campus. We encourage the entire ASFA community to do their best to reuse, reduce, and recycle.

Unpaid Meal Policy

Bad Debt Policy 2022-2023

Alabama School of Fine Arts CNP will use a cut-off date of June 30 or student withdrawal from ASFA to determine if a debt is uncollectible or not.  If a debt is approaching the “uncollectible” status, then it will be brought to the attention of the CFO and the ASFA Executive Director to see if there are other avenues to attempt collection with the particular situation.   If a debt is determined as uncollectable, then CNP will invoice the ASFA general funds for reimbursement of the outstanding funds.  

Worthless Check Policy

If a check is returned due to insufficient funds, the issuer will be alerted.  In addition to full payment, a fee of $20 will be imposed to cover bank charges.  If unpaid, the finance office will be notified of the insufficient funds with the additional charges and negative balance.  This may result in the suspension of student participation in Specialty activities.  

Wellness Policy Pursuant to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 relating to schools with federally-funded school meal programs, the Executive Director authorizes the creation of an ASFA Wellness Committee to perform the following activities:

• The Wellness Committee (WC) shall develop, assess and revise as necessary, specific goals relating to nutrition education, physical activity and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.
• The WC will consist of the ASFA Health and Wellness Coordinator, School Nurse and CNP Director.
• We will meet each semester to discuss current programs and possible developments such as dorm activities, MAD Day, Get Active Day, Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner offerings, etc.
• The WC shall ensure the establishment of nutrition guidelines for all foods available on campus during the school day with the objectives of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity. The CNP Director and CNP staff will stay up to date on current trends and information and meet regularly.
• The WC shall provide assurance that guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall not be less restrictive than regulations and guidance issued by the Secretary of Agriculture. The CNP director will stay up to date on Secretary of Agriculture guidelines and report any fiscal implications with ASFA CFOO.
• The WC shall establish a plan for measuring the impact and implementation of the local wellness policy. The HW Coordinator, Nurse, and CNP Director will assess ASFA student wellness through student interviews, written feedback, and discussion, then report findings to the ASFA Senior Administrative Staff.

• The WC shall involve input from parents, students, and representatives of the faculty in the development and continuous review of the school’s wellness policy. • The HW Coordinator, ASFA Nurse, and CNP Director will be in regular contact with internal and external resources in order to stay abreast of current trends and opportunities.
